This is the way I see it. This program is at a crossroads. I think their biggest problem is two things. The staff thinks that kids want to come to UL just because it's UL and the history. Well, college sports are completely different now, and kids won't just come here because it's UL. The staff is arrogant when it comes to that. Secondly, and probably the most important, is that they are fishing in the wrong place for talent. It's clear to see Alyson wants to create chaos on the bases with steals and at the plate with small ball bunting. That's her style, and it doesn't look like she will change. The team lost three players who fit that style (Watts, Ardion, Ferguson) and hasn't replaced any of those types of kids yet. The team stole 50 bases last season, and Liscano had a team high of 15 as a full-time starter. If that is the brand they want to play, then why hasn't the team reached out to a player that fit that mold? A local player played last season who is now in the portal. She started as a true freshman and then, in game 3 of the season, got hit with a pitch that broke her hand. She had to spend some time recovering. Once she returned after about a 1/3 way through the season, the player who took her place was playing well, so she was now the new pinch runner. She had 16 steals for the season as a pinch runner only. Once she ran, one time her time was up. In a full season as a starter, I'm sure she would have had 40-50 steals. Why are the Cajuns not going after players like that if that is their style of play? This is a kid who is a grinder and plays for the name on the front of the jersey. I just see lazy recruiting. No player, regardless of conference, who can help this team should be looked down on.Comment

With Deggs, I feel this year the players he had bought into the system. They did hit the rough patch middle of the season, but the turn-around was that they were bought in and it all started clicking again. That built excitement. That also means more fans giving to the NIL directly towards baseball.
And with the players dialed in, most decided to go one more year instead of chasing money or additional playing time. Sometimes that happens, sometimes that doesn’t.
If the season ended 6 weeks before, I don’t think you see what happened for Deggs in the off-season.
The reality is that most now don’t care about tradition. You still have some that do, but most are looking out for can I make some money while playing. And if I am not playing, where can I go to play to add stock to the game to move to a big school. I heard this thought process from someone going to Nicholls. There is no longer longevity in the schools because they are just trying to better themselves and move on. Until you can play that game as a coach, you will be stuck.
That also means NIL money directly to that sport from the fans, and not just depend on a big pot of money. I don’t know how much is being given to softball, but it has to come from the fans to go directly to that sport. And I have heard that is a piece that may be lacking some. But more excitement in a season tends to correlate to more NIL money, like baseball this season.
It also means having the people on staff as well as Aly to also market that. Go out to businesses to try to get the NIL dollars.
And I get it, it’s tough when we buy our season tickets to the sports, give to the RCAF, join the sport specific club, and now NIL. And maybe we cannot do everything. But it is important now to give to the NIL in today’s college athletics.
To me it seems like the NIL is lacking for softball on top of a coaching staff who is not closing the deal or having the excitement behind them. Tradition and the little bit of NIL money is not doing it. Until softball has that NIL money, it won’t happen.
i feel that Glasgo, was able to find those players with talent, and had enough NIL money. He wanted more but was also able to close the deal by what money he had and also what he could offer as a coach. And it got them more often than not. But he also knew it would take more NIL money for softball. And you saw how far tradition went when the players left.
As mentioned, softball has to find a way to raise more NIL money to overcome other things. It can’t come from a big pot of money across the sports. And I just don’t see that happening at this moment.👍 1Comment

Glasco really didn't have to deal with NIL or the portal. He didn't offer any player NIL money while at UL. Deggs connects with the fans, Aly doesn't especially on social media. Nothing about Aly gets anyone fired up or excited. I haven't seen Aly or anyone connected to UL softball directly or indirectly ask for any money. When you don't ask, the answer is always no.

Deggs isn't getting NIL money for players. What he is getting is Revenue Sharing dollars through the Edge program.
Big difference. Also, a further indication that the softball staff lacks the urgency to push fundraising.
What happened in baseball is that Deggs or his staff asked a few relatively big donors to issue a funding challenge whereby they agreed to match the first $150k donated to the Edge program for baseball.
Neither the RCAF, nor the softball staff did anything like that for softball. In fact, it is a safe bet that most softball fans were not even aware that such a program exists for sport specific donors.Comment
