    NCAA Eligibility Change

The NCAA Division I Cabinet unanimously approved a new five-year, age-based eligibility model Tuesday.

Under the new rule, athletes in all sports will be given five years of eligibility over five seasons once their college eligibility clock begins. The clock starts upon initial full-time enrollment in college or at the beginning of the academic year following their 19th birthday, whichever occurs first.

The move is meant to eliminate the need for redshirts and waivers, which have drawn scrutiny in recent years as athletes have sued the NCAA challenging eligibility rules.

Wondering how this effects a couple of Cajuns baseball players that could come back next year.

for those of you that don’t know this is a ruling allowing athletes to compete for five full seasons within a continuous five-year window.

I could be wrong but I don’t think it affects any of them, Rigo, Torres, Hermann and Pap all played their 5th year last year. Brasch would be a redshirt senior due to injury so I believe would have to come back as a senior regardless unless he can get a juco year back. Morgan will be a redshirt junior next year. Amedee could come back and would be the only one I believe.

No Retroactive Extra Year: The NCAA explicitly stated that athletes who just completed their fourth season of competition without a previous redshirt year will not be granted an additional season.

Not right or wrong but that's quite a pendulum swing on the heels of all those extra Covid grants.

Saw this and this seems to be the best way to describe the new 5/5.

Case 1: If you exhausted your eligibility this past school year, you’re done. No extra time. This is where the lawsuits will happen.

Case 2: If you still have eligibility going into this school year, you get to choose the old model or the new 5-for-5, whichever benefits you.

                  Two examples
                  - “Player A” graduated in 2023, never redshirted, and has played 3 years. Instead of 2026 being his final and 4th year of competition, he could opt into the new model. That would give him two more years to play his five.

                  - “Player B” graduated in 2024, redshirted his first year and medical redshirted in 2025. He would want to use the old model, so he would have four years left to compete.

Case 3: Freshmen in 2026 get to pick the model they want. I assume most will pick 5-for-5 to get the most playing time.

Case 4: Class of 2027 and beyond are using the new model.

How long before this is challenged?

The only exemptions that will be given will be for pregnancy, active military service and religious missions. Everyone else with be 5 for 5.
