    UL Battle for a Name

Watching the regional on ESPN+, it made me think of how far we have come with the name battle over the years. When this first started we shot out of the gate with ESPN and CBS on board, but then we stuttered for years with UL-Lafayette, ULL and others. We are finally at the point, where everyone in the country that sees us, only sees UL or Louisiana unless we are playing one of those Louisiana schools that refuse to give us the respect of the name and they know who they are. If you check any of our opponents' websites, with the exception of a handful of Louisiana schools, we are Louisiana, if you check any other athletic website, we are Louisiana. It took a long time, but guys we are there!!!!!

Great work by all Cajun fans and the athletic department and even some respect to the administration for the strong push to get this done. I realize that it did not happen as fast as most of us would have hoped, but the work paid off.

    WE ARE LOUISIANA, GEAUX CAJUNS!!!!

We’ve come a long way, but we’re still missing one crucial piece, a Louisiana logo that defines us. If we had that, I honestly believe everything else would fall into place. To me, that’s the biggest thing holding us back from solidifying the name forever. A strong, consistent mark becomes part of the identity, and right now we don’t have that anchor.

I’m perfectly fine with the current UL logo, but if that’s the direction we’re going, then it needs to be used consistently and confidently. The other things you mentioned do matter, but none of them carry the same long‑term weight as establishing a definitive Louisiana logo. That’s the piece that cements the name, the brand, and the identity for good.

I think baseball went with the Louisiana in script during the regional that might be that look that they are going to go with for now.

Well that is part of it, but it needs to be a logo, like the Michigan M, Tennessee T, Georgia G Oklahoma OU, Oregon O, California Cal, Florida F, South Carolina SC, West Virginia WV, Virginia V etc.

if we can establish that then we are good. That is what needs to be done.

as of right now they say UL logo hats this year was a throwback hat and never see it on anything else, maybe they were just testing it for baseball see if they get any duff for using it.

The interlocked UL and the Script Cajuns and Script Louisiana are going to be what we go with moving forward.

Good they need to use more of it and not be scared to use it.

That is the main part, everything else like the fight song, and Pride of Louisiana that is lagniappe. To me that ir the main issue that keeps us with this UL-Lafayette, Lafayette moniker.

i hope you right because ive heard they can not use the UL without having Lafayette or something reference to it somewhere.

time to stop being scared of your shadow.

The interlocking UL was used at the baseball regional and the conference tournament with the script Louisiana on the jersey. No Lafayette anywhere on those uniforms.

Interlocking UL was the laziest effort ever.

Was used by U-Louisville and U-Liberia at the time.

Still used by University of Liberia.

I agree. The interlocking UL had/has potential if we use it consistently , but the way it was done really did feel lazy. It wasn’t unique, and other schools like Louisville and even the University of Liberia which you pointed out the versions of it, which tells you how generic it was. I guess we can be fine with generic,

It could have been a much stronger mark, but I guess it got the job done for what it was. And when you look at schools like Oregon, you see how much a real logo shift can matter. They had success on the field, sure, but when they moved from the old OU‑style mark to the single “O,” that change played a huge role in solidifying their brand. A simple, bold symbol becomes iconic when a school commits to it. Yes they won championships and had Nike backing, but them changing the look had alot to do with it. Even Oregon had enough sense to use it when it came to there helmets, Pretty much every university has the assertiveness to use it on there helmets. Tennesee, West Virginia, Virginia, Indiana, CAL, South Carolina, Arizona, Utah, Colorado, etc.

They brought the interlocking UL back this year as a baseball throwback, which is fine, Which is my understanding someone can correct me if i am wrong, but it still doesn’t feel like a true long‑term identity. If UL wants a recognizable brand, it needs a logo that’s original, consistent, and fully committed to not something borrowed or reused from other schools. It needs to be a mark that can be used in all aspects. Helmets, Hats, Jerseys, Windows, Doors, T-Shirts, Banners you name it you using it. The Ragin Cajuns is great and unique, but when you used it for every single thing, you not solidifying the Louisiana name. How often does Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Georgia even use Tigers, Crimson Tide, or Bulldogs on stuff? Like very rarely its secondary to the AU, LSU, A, G logos they use.

The biggest reason why I think UL hasn’t been used consistently is because there’s always been this idea whether from policy, interpretation, or just administrative caution that ‘UL’ must be paired with an identifier like ‘Lafayette.’ But even in the rules the term Louisiana or logos can be used pertaining to that. There is nothing prohibiting Louisiana, that is my understanding.

I think the problem is the L letter is not symmetrical and may not look right on a left side of a helmut.
