Well know more later this month if the reporting is accurate. If it does happen, regardless if they launch or mfg rockets, it will be a huge boost to the economy of Acadiana. Once up and running, UL should see a boost in enrollment as well.

Without a doubt this has to be a launch facility. It very well may have other attributes as well but you aren't buying that property for any other primary purpose other than launches. As noted it is a good location for polar orbits. And there is a reason that most launch sites are near oceans. Don't want to be firing those things off over populated land masses. There are very few alternatives in the U.S. to this site. Think about it...you are not finding that amount of property on the coast available anywhere in this country. I would imagine the Port of Iberia could benefit from this greatly. Easy land and water access and a ton of under utilized space at the port. A lot of work could happen at the port with easy transport to launch pads in Vermilion.

There was a T-Pic article on Tuesday, I believe, that stated Space X was looking to put up a Spaceport on Pecan Island. There were some interesting reactions from the locals, there, to say the least. I believe the environmental impacts of that spaceport would far outweigh any benefits to the area.

That area being discussed in Louisiana is 14 square miles.

I would suspect there are lots of hurdles to jump. One that comes to mind is hurricane storm surge. Some areas 10 to 12 feet above the ground. I'm sure they have had the same issues at the Kennedy space center but that was then this is now.

Sewer, water and electric Utilities is another issue. But that is a minor one compared to the storm surge issue.

I assume you are aware that only about 3-5% of the area being purchased will be elevated for the facility; the remaining 100,000+ acres is being purchased as a mitigation bank, and it is very likely that it will still be available for public use.

The economic impact on Vermilion Parish and the rest of Acadiana will be huge. The ancillary businesses necessary to support the Space X facility will create thousands of new jobs in all fields, along with the jobs brought in by Space X. Particularly if the facility is a manufacturing and/or maintenance center, there will be hundreds of jobs in Space X for machinists, fabrication welders, electronics technicians and other similar workers, and hundreds more in support positions.

Also, the infrastructure work that will be done on area roads will help provide additional storm surge protection as well as evacuation routes for locals. I would also be surprised if Space X does not support efforts to minimize coastal erosion or even to build erosion control and/or passive land building structures just offshore of the area from Freshwater City to the Mermentau River.

For utilities, I'm sure they would do just as the LNG plants I do work. They are completely off the grid & self sustained.

Look at all the announcements by SpaceX and Tesla for here in Texas. The % of GDP that those two companies alone are adding to the economy is breath-taking. If Louisiana can duplicate this, even on a smaller scale, it will be great for the state.
