Kneaux from the GetGeaux Lamar Cardinals

    Offense built to run
Lamar's offensive scheme centers around running the football. Sophomore LaDamion McDowell is the only significant ball carrier back from last year, but Rossomando added a litany of new players at the position. Transfer running backs Jojo Uga (Albany) and Parker Jenkins (East Carolina) both have Division I experience.

Meanwhile, the quarterback competition will be one to watch. Aiden McCown returns after playing 12 games and throwing for 10 touchdowns last season. Fellow quarterback Evan Bullock joined the team this offseason after spending three years at Louisiana Tech.

    Defense ready to rush
All defenses aim to take the ball away from their opponent. Last year, Lamar's defense forced a respectable 19 total turnovers. Rossomando hopes to see that number spike thanks to an improved pass rush this season.

It all starts with defensive end Andrew Huff, a senior who was named as a preseason All-American by multiple media outlets. Huff wreaked havoc on opposing offenses last year with 10.5 tackles for loss and a team-high 6.5 sacks.

There was a lot of hype surrounding the NCAA FCS National Game of the Week Saturday and Lamar University did not disappoint knocking off No. 15 Abilene Christian in a thriller, 21-14, at Provost Umphrey Stadium.

The game, which was one of two top 25 matchups at the NCAA FCS level in the opening week, marked the fourth Lamar win over a top-25 program in the past three seasons. Prior to Rossomando's arrival Lamar had not won a game against a top-25 opponent since 2019.
