The series this weekend is a study in contrasts. USA relies heavily on two very good pitchers, both with sub 3.00 ERA [sub 2.50 in conference games], but does not hit well at all [.239 in conference games, .247 overall]. The Jag's ability to score runs is last in the conference [3.55 R/GM], but they are only giving up 2.76 runs/game in conference play. Their fielding percentage is last in conference [.959], though they do defend the short game very well [only 5 sac bunts against them in conference play]. Jags pitchers do have issues with walks and hit batters [total of 75 in conference games], but seem to do a good job of not allowing those free base runners to score. Opposing hitters in conference games are hitting only .218 against the Jag's staff. It is worth noting that in their last six conference games [Marshall and USM] they have given up 4.5 runs/game, and they are 1-5 in those six contests.
Louisiana wins with offense [4.86 runs/game in conference], though the Cajuns have struggled a bit against better pitchers. We have given up exactly 5 runs/game in conference play. In order to win this series, UL must get the same level of pitching that we got the last two conference series [3.33 runs/game allowed], and must avoid leaving runners on base, as there wont be that many of them. It will be an interesting series.
