Louisiana's Tony Sterner became the third Ragin' Cajuns player in as many weeks to claim Sun Belt Conference weekly honors when he was named the league's Special Teams Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
Sterner, who joined defensive backs Collin Jacob (Sept. 21) and Brent Gordon Jr. (Sept. 28) in earning SBC weekly recognition, picked up his first career award after he knocked in a 37-yard game-winner as time expired in a 23-20 win over Arkansas State.
The Kingwood, Texas, native tied a career-high with three field goals – all in the second half – as Louisiana erased a 10-7 deficit at halftime. Sterner's 38-yarder tied the game at 10-10 on the opening drive of the second half and a 25-yarder also knotted the game up at 20-20 with 5:38 to play.
Sterner tacked on two extra points to extend his consecutive made streak to 55 dating back to last season, while also improving to 7-for-7 on field goal attempts this season.

It appears to me that Sterner does not have a huge leg, but he is pretty deadly accurate from 45-50 in. I am wondering if it would come down to a 50+ yarder for a game winner would we see Logan Klotz take that attempt? I hope we never have to worry about thatComment

Sterner made a 55 yarder against ULM last year, so I think if there aren't terrible weather conditions, I think we would see him attempt that distance.Comment

I forgot about that, so nevermind. It just seems like a few of his 40ish yarders this year have not looked like they have had a ton of distance on them.Comment

Maybe that's by design. On the shorter kicks, he may be going for height rather than lots of distance to prevent them being blocked.Comment
