Deggs believes UL baseball is built to take next step in '27

After a postseason run that ended shy of a Super Regional appearance, Louisiana baseball head coach Matt Deggs believes the Ragin' Cajuns have positioned themselves to make an even deeper run in 2027.

Was it announced that Chase Morgan was 100% physically and coming back? If so, what would our pitching rotation look like?

Coach stated last week that C-Meaux will start pitching this week. I believe he will be 100% come next season.

The question mark is going to be how good are the two pitchers that did not pitch at all last year. We have 2 starting pitchers, C-Meaux and Griffin Miller, the ace of the 2025 Marshall staff that sat out all of 2026. If these guys pitch to their potential, then we will be fine. It just neither has pitched in over a year. We need Sawyer Pruitt to be what he can be and Ty Roman to start the year like he finished it. If these things happen our starting rotation will be really good.

ALOT has to go right to even get out of a Regional as a mid-major program, even if you're the host seed, because you're likely matched up with one P4 school that's able to buy bullpen depth. We saw that in 2016. Not being able to finish off Arizona in the first game of that Regional Championship proved detrimental for us. Then, if you move on, it's 2 out of 3 in a Super vs very likely another P4 program.

We've got a couple Regional Championship Game appearances under our belt with Deggs. Now let's see if we can take that next step. We haven't advanced to a Super since 2015.

This. We need multiples of reliable arms.

I think guys like Parker Smith and JR Tollet can be huge for us this year. One of those guys may earn a starting spot on the weekend. The depth we have will be huge.

I think JR will be in the mix for a starting job, but you have to remember if Chase and Griffin are healthy, they are probably Friday night type guys, Sawyer Pruitt has one of the best young arms we have seen in a while and Ty Roman was consistently solid on Sundays in the belt. JR needs to get back 2025 type numbers, not 2026, if he does, he can battle for a weekend spot. I don't think Smith is a starter on this team at this point for 2 reasons. #1, he and Pearson were so good out of the pen, I think they will be there again, with Smith getting an occasional weekday start and #2 we are so deep at starting pitching. A few pitchers will be disappointed in their roles next season because we might have 5 or 6 potential starters, but there are only 3 weekend starts, meaning someone will have to step up and be that guy that we need in long relief or spot starts. The depth of this staff is going to be strong, something we were missing this year. Again, much of this will have to do with the health of two guys who have not pitched in a year but both carry Friday night type of stuff. Miller was 7-4 with a 3.46 ERA in 15 starts on a team that had 33 wins in 2025, he led the team in starts, wins and strikeouts.

Just remember the USM team of 2026. A great regular season followed by a tough regional at home. Any game can be lost putting you in a tough position. That is what happened to the Eagles. You need a little luck as well as talent to advance.

                      True.

If things go right, Louisiana can do it.

If I remember correctly, the year we went to the CWS we lost the last 3 games of the season at home to UNO.

This is true the main factor is that almost every team that is in the NCAA tournament has a pretty good Friday night guy, so depending how the stars align for pitching you could be facing a very starter and on any night one pitcher gets hot or keeps you off balance and who knows what could happen. I think back to 2014, one of the best teams UL has ever had, if not the best. Jackson State had a plan and a really good one. They decided to throw a soft throwing left hander, Vincent Anthonia who had only had 5 starts all season vs the #6 national seed, UL. UL stranded 11 base runners that night and lost 1-0, after Anthonia pitched 6 scoreless innings and then finished the last 3 innings with one of their better pitchers in Alexander Juday.

In the NCAA tournament almost, anything can happen as you are playing against some good teams with some talent and on any given night a pitcher can shut down hitters. And that is what happened to us in 2014 and that is what happened to USM in 2026 vs Little Rock, now Little Rock was a lot better baseball team than the 2014 Jackson State team that we lost to. But go ask UCLA how they felt losing to Saint Mary's twice and then getting knocked out of their regional. Most people had UCLA running away with the National Championship in 2026. The UC-San Diego coach who went 1-2 vs UCLA early in the season said he had never seen as good of a team as the 2026 UCLA team in all of his years of coaching. This was a team that finished 52-8 with loses to UC San Diego, SDSU, UCSB, Sacramento State, Oregon and Washington in the regular season and at one point was 33-2 on the season, finishing the regular season 51-6.

We have 20 arms on fall roster, pretty confident in 6 of the 20…need to find 6 arms out of the other 14, I like our chances with that.
